Dumela is the New G’day

Sometimes I think that when I eventually arrive back in the states I’ll feel like Crocodile Dundee walking around New York City saying “G’day” to every passer-by. Everywhere in Botswana, even in this urban city but especially in the smaller villages, people smile and say hello (or “Dumela”) to everyone they pass. Sometimes they’ll even throw in a wave from across the street. It could be misunderstood as rude not to, and because a lot of Americans and Brits aren’t always used to it, people in Francistown often seem pleasantly surprised to see a white person engaging in it.  I’m really enjoying and getting used to this practice, and so perhaps New York City shouldn’t be my first stop on my return trip back.
